Mosaic Mask Art

Community in which artist lives/works: Churchville, PA

Medium artist works/category of work: Stained Art Glass

Some details about artist’s work: My mosaics and stained glass art designs have been developed from a variety of sources including authentic masks, photographs and drawings.

Masks use opalescent glass, which looks great in reflected light. Each piece is carefully hand cut, ground, beveled and cemented to the shape of the mask. Polymer grout is then used to fill in the design lines and eachwork of art is complete.

Background info:

My wife and I were on vacation in Floridamany years ago and one day we were checking out all the neat shops on Captiva Island. One shop caught myattention because of the brightly colored stained glass sea creatures hangingin the window. We went in and I was immediately smitten by all the beautifulartwork.

After buying a large lobster sun catcher I turned to my wifeand said, “I must learn how to do stained glass artwork.”

After returning home I learned the craft at a local artstudio and began creating simple sun catchers. After my skills improved I movedon to stained glass windows, flat panel and Tiffany style lamps, mirrors andkaleidoscopes.

Always looking for a new design challenge I decided toincorporate my glass work ability with my hobby of collecting tribal masks. Masks are mysterious captivating objects and tell a story from the culture theycome from.

My glass masks are created using the finest stained glass available and with close attention to detail. Each mask creation is a unique piece of art because of its design and the variations in textures and colors inherent in stained glass. Each mask is meticulously crafted and produced one at a time.

Creating and sharing these mask designs is thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable.
